Rail Freight In China-Russia Far East Borders Increase Thanks To New Bridge

Date of release:2023-12-06 Author: Click:

Rail freight volumes moved between China and Russia through the Far East increased by 22 per cent in the first ten months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, as Russian Railways (RZD) mentioned. The largest slice of these volumes was moved through the Grodekovo (RU) – Suifenhe (CN) border crossing. However, a significant boost was provided by the new Nizhneleninskoye (RU) – Tongjiang (CN) railway bridge.

In total 11.9 million tons of goods were transported through the border crossings. When it comes to the Grodekovo-Suifenhe border crossing, located north of the port of Vladivostok, 6.8 million tons of goods were transported, RZD underlined. The types of cargo that experienced significant growth are grain, which more than doubled and reached 408,000 tons, and coal, which increased by one and a half times to two million tons.

Concerning the new Nizhneleninskoye-Tongjiang railway bridge, it was inaugurated last November and opened for container traffic a few weeks ago. According to RZD, the bridge helped to move 2.5 million tons of goods, most of which was coal (1.9 million tons), followed by iron ore (583,000 tons). Since its opening to container trains, 10,400 tons of containerised cargo was transported on the bridge.
