Traffic and shipping industrial halted due to massive strikes started in Germany

Date of release:2023-03-27 Author: Click:

Persistent inflation and soaring energy prices have led to industrial strikes in many areas of Germany since the mid March, with basic services and transport disrupted by the breakdown of Labour bargain negotiations.

More than 4,000 clinicians in Germany went on strike on 21st Mar, marched on the streets of Hamburg to request better pay to mitigate the effects of high inflation. Port of Hamburg pilots and container ship stevedores also went on strike on the second day. As a result, the Hamburg Port Authority temporarily suspended the vessels calling and departure since 10:00 am on the same day until further notice. The strike organizer, German Union announced that the strike in Hamburg would last until 24th morning. At least 5,000 workers at Hamburg's airports, hospitals, day care centers, schools, opera houses and waste disposal centers gathered in front of City Hall on Monday to go on strike.

According to German Union and EVG announcement, a larger strike will be held on the 27th, involving public transport networks in most parts of Germany. Some highway tunnels will be closed and Germany's national transport network may come to a halt. The next round of labor and management negotiations will also be held on the same day. The traffic and shipping industrial will be severely affected in case that no agreement is reached by then.
