First round-trip train from Kuming to Bangkok

On Feb 7th, the first China-Lao-Thailand round-trip railway train departed from Kunming, expected to arrive in Bangkok, Thailand in 55 hours. According to China Railway, the block train carried 19 refrigerated containers of fresh vegetables with a total of 286 tons.

 

The train would cross through Vientiane, Laos, where it will be converted from standard gauge to meter gauge before heading to Bangkok. Compared with traditional rail-road intermodal transportation, the whole rail transportation is expected to save the time by one day and about 20 percent in terms of the cost, according to China Railway. Containers on arrival in Thailand would not return in empty. The returned containers will be loaded with local Thai longan, durian and other seasonal fruits.
